Burhanpur (Alt: 233 M) is on the Itarsi/ Khadwa –Bhusuwal railway route and 200 km away from Indore, 69 km away from Khandwa, 337 km from Bhopal, 54 km from Bhusuwal and 99 km from Jalgaon. From Indore, the trains ply to Burhanpur via Khandwa. The district of Burhanpur was created from East Nimar district and was declared a separate district on 15th August 2003 with its head quarters located at Burhanpur town. The district is situated in Tapti valley. It touches the northern border of Maharashtra. The district is divided from Khandwa on the north by the Satpura Range.

Burhanpur is memorable for Emperor Shahjahan’s beloved wife Mumtaz – she was cremated here on 17th June 1631. However her body was shifted later to Agra and the Tajmahal was built upon her grave. The most attraction of Buruhanpur is the 7 storeyed forts, made by Miron Adil Shah Farooqui, on the bank of Tapti. It is ornamented with glass & colorful tiles. There are number of wells but the source of water in them is unknown till date.

A treasure house of history & archeology exists 20 km away from Buruhanpur on the top of Asirgarh hill. There is a fort built by Usha & Ahir. A Shiva temple of the10th century is also there.
