Port Blair is situated on the rugged land of south Andaman and surrounded by Bay of Bengal from all sides. It is a modern city island with hillocks and shaded by green forests. Aberdeen Bazaar is the main commercial hub of the town. The place is surrounded by bus stand, shipping passenger terminal, hotels and other important offices.
Places of tourist interest:
Cellular Jail: The jail was constructed step by
step in between 1896 to 1906. This three storied Cellular jail had seven wings and 698 cells, out of seven, four wings destroyed in earthquake and Japanese air attack. Now, there are only 296 cells. Part of the cell is now Govind Ballav Pant Hospital and a National Memorial Art Gallery.
The right side picture shows a part of the Cellular Jail. Many freedom fighters used to sit under this tree when they were brought to this jail from the mainland. But the tree is no more today.
Water Sports Complex: Water sports complex is at Dilthaman in the centre of the city at the feet of Cellular provides facilities of water sports on sea-water, swimming-pool, pedal and rowing boat. Marine Park is on the adjacent culvert type bridge intended for entertainment of the children.
Gandhi Park is situated adjacent to the Governor House and has the facilities of entertainment of all ages.
Fisheries Museum: The Museum is located very near to the Marine Park at sea-side. The range of collections includes crocodile, shark, dolphin, lobster, crab and more than 350 species of maritime animals & corals.
Gymkhana Ground: The national flag of free India was hoisted for the 1st time by the Commander-Chief of Azad Hind Army Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose here in this ground on 30 September 1943.
Zoological Museum: 200 species of animals are available here. Handicrafts of islanders made from pearls, conch shells, oysters and wood are also displayed and sold here.
